Lake Titicaca, the highest navigable lake in the world, has its eastern shores in Peruvian territory and its western shores in Bolivia. In this isolated and magical location, indigenous lake dwellers build their houses on floating islands made from reeds, just as their ancestors did centuries before. The lake itself is a magical sight, with glistening waters surrounded by breathtaking mountainous landscapes. Whether sailing across the lake or just admiring the sunset from your hotel in Puno, you’ll be astonished by the sheer beauty of this natural wonder.
During this Lake Titicaca vacation, you will visit the handmade islands and meet the people who built them—truly a remarkable experience not possible anywhere else in the world. You’ll also get to explore Puno, located on the shores of the lake. At first glance, this small provincial town may not seem like it has much to offer, but it’s a treasure trove of culture and a great place to observe how locals live outside of Peru’s bigger cities.
Day 1 : Arrival to Puno
Day 2 : Lake Titicaca Tour with Uros & Taquile Island Visit
Day 3 : Departure from Puno
Day 1 : Arrival to Puno
- Upon arrival to the airport, train station, or bus station, a representative will meet you and take you to your confirmed Puno hotel. If flying to Puno, the airport is situated in Juliaca, a 45-minute drive from Puno. The bus and train stations are located directly in Puno’s town center.
- Puno sits on the shores of Lake Titicaca, and is the main launching point for lake excursions. This area has great importance in history and folklore: legend has it that the Inca creator deity Viracocha (the Sun) emerged from the lake and sent his children, Manco Capac and Mamo Ocllo, to found the Inca dynasty.
- You’ll spend the afternoon of your first day acclimatizing to the region’s high altitude (12,467 feet or 3,800 meters above sea level) and exploring the lakeside at your leisure.
Day 2 : Lake Titicaca Tour with Uros & Taquile Island Visit
- After breakfast at your hotel, you’ll embark on a full-day tour of Lake Titicaca. This sparkling gem is the highest navigable lake in the world at a height of 12,379 feet (3,890 meters) above sea level.
- Your lake journey will take you to several of the man-made islands of the Uro people. There are an estimated 32 inhabited islands, though the number changes as new islands are made and old ones are abandoned. The islands are constructed from many layers of totora reeds weaved together, an ancient process still in use today.
- You’ll continue to the island of Taquile. This island is full of pre-Inca and Inca ruins. The locals who live here are expert craftsmen, and you may want to purchase some souvenirs here. Interestingly, on this island, it is the men and not the women who have historically worked with woven material. You will be led around the island to all of the most important sites such as the main plaza and the market.
- After the tour of Taquile, you will have time for lunch. Then, you will be board the boat and taken back to Puno.
- Once in Puno, you have the remainder of the evening to relax at your hotel or enjoy some traditional cuisine in one of the local restaurants. See our Puno Travel Guide for more city information and recommendations.
Day 3 : Departure from Puno
- After breakfast at your hotel, you might want to take one last stroll along the lake before meeting your transfer back to the airport, train station, or bus station. If you are traveling to Cusco, we strongly recommend you take the Cusco-Puno train, called the Andean Explorer, a journey that offers spectacular views and helps one understand the region’s landscape.
