The main gateway to the exotic Peruvian Amazon, Puerto Maldonado is located deep in the heart of the lush Madre de Dios region. Full of wild forests, sinuous rivers, and oxbow lakes Puerto Maldonado holds world records in biodiversity for its hundreds of species of ants, butterflies, birds, and other animals. Formerly a center for rubber, wood, gold, and petroleum trade, Puerto Maldonado now thrives on eco-tourism and has a great infrastructure that allows travelers to visit this pristine rainforest.
Built by a Swiss-Peruvian family on the border of the Tambopata Candamo Reserve, the Inotawa Lodge is more than just lodge—it is a tribute to nature. The large and comfortable rooms are ideal for relaxing and taking in the beauty of the surrounding rainforest. By following the traditional native style of construction, the lodge keeps visitors immersed in the ways and lifestyles of the jungle. The lodge offers a variety of jungle activities for guests to choose from to create their ideal Amazon experience. All tours are led by expert naturalist guides.

Day 1 : Arrival to Puerto Maldonado & Transfer to Inotawa Lodge
- A representative will meet you at the Puerto Maldonado airport and take you to the Tambopata River port. Here you will meet your English-speaking guide who will accompany you on the 1.5-hour boat ride to the jungle lodge. Keep an eye on the river banks where you may be able to spot wildlife.
- When you arrive at the lodge you’ll enjoy lunch and have some time to relax and get settled in your room.
- In the afternoon you’ll go on a walk around the lodge area with an expert guide who will tell you about the local animal and plant life. Among the exotic species you may see are toucans with massive bills, lupuna trees over a thousand years old, as well as lizards and butterflies.
- Enjoy dinner back at the lodge before setting off on a night walk. Nocturnal hikes are a great way to see insects, bats, and other night animals. Look for their eyes gleaming in the dark.
Day 2 : Select Jungle Activities at Inotawa Lodge
- Inotawa Lodge offers a variety of exciting jungle activities to choose from. You can pick which ones interest you most. Some of the options are described here.
- If desired, you can wake up early for a trip to the La Torre Clay Lick. This is the best place to see parrots and macaws, which come to feed on the rich salt nutrients. You’ll then return to the lodge for a late breakfast.
- After breakfast, you can choose to take a 15 minute boat ride and a half hour walk to the Tres Chimbadas Lake. (Note: If you are staying for 4 days, we recommend doing this activity on day 3 instead and starting early.) At the lake you’ll take a canoe ride to look at lake vegetation and animals, such as herons, reptiles, and otters.
- In the afternoon you may have time to take more jungle walks. There are numerous trails around the lodge that lead to distinct types of jungle environment.
- After a delicious dinner at the lodge, you can take a night boat ride along the river to look for caimans (crocodile-like reptiles).
