Day 1 : Arrival to Manu & Transfer to Wildlife Research Center
- You will be picked up at your hotel in Cusco and taken to the airport for the flight to Manu. Upon arrival, you will be met by a representative who will take you on a motor boat ride down the Madre de Dios River, to the Wildlife Research Center.
- You will arrive to lodge in time for lunch before setting off on your first jungle expedition. You will go on a hike along a trail that leads to a lookout point above the river, from where you’ll be able to observe parrots.
- After dinner back at the lodge, those who wish can go on a night walk with the naturalist guide in search of nocturnal wildlife.
Day 2 : Parrot & Macaw Clay Lick Tour
- Today you’ll start early and head out on a Macaw clay lick tour. This is one of the world’s greatest natural spectacles, as hundreds of parrots and macaws gather here to eat the clay.
- Later in the morning, you’ll go on a canoe tour to Cocha Blanco, an oxbow lake where a family of giant otters can sometimes be observed, in addition to other wildlife.
- After lunch back at the lodge, you will explore the jungle trails around the lodge with your guide in search of birds and monkeys.
Day 3 : Oxbow Lake Tour & Jungle Exploration
- After breakfast, you’ll go on a full-day jungle expedition on the trails around the lodge. Keep an eye out for the Monk Saki, a very rare monkey species that can be seen in the tierra firme forest.
- During the day, you’ll explore trails and be able to observe several bird species such as manakins, guans, and parakeets, as well as various monkey species, including the Black Spider. You might also catch a glimpse of tapirs, largest South American land mammals and frequent visitors on the forest.
- In the late afternoon, you’ll return to the lodge for dinner and a relaxing evening.
Day 4 : Oxbow Lake Tour and Jungle Hike or Departure from Manu
Today your itinerary will vary based on if you’ve selected a 3-day or 4-day Amazon adventure.
4-day itinerary
- After breakfast, you’ll head out on a 2-hour boat trip to the airport where you’ll catch your flight back to Cusco. On the way, you’ll have a last opportunity to observe flocks of birds and maybe even some capybaras, the world’s largest rodent.
5-day itinerary
- After breakfast, you’ll spend another full day exploring the jungle trails around the lodge with your naturalist guide in search for more exciting wildlife.
- You’ll spend another night at the Wildlife Research Center, with an opportunity to go on a night walk to observe nocturnal wildlife.
Day 5 : Departure from Manu
- After breakfast, you’ll head out on a 2-hour boat trip to the airport where you’ll catch your flight back to Cusco. On the way, you’ll have a last opportunity to observe flocks of birds and maybe even some capybaras, the world’s largest rodent.
